Mental Models in Human-Computer Interaction [editorial] A mental model is based on each user's individual background knowledge and past experiences, therefore different users might construct different mental models of the same system. Mental models are what people really have in their heads and what guides their use of things.

This project was to understand the gap between designers' and users' mental models and to describe how a system is designed and implemented on the basis of the designer's mental model.
